    We Shall Keep Faith

"And now the Torch and Poppy red
We wear in honour of our dead
Fear not that ye have died for naught
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields"

Moina Michael

The History of SPAM

Certain events changed the course of World War II - the D-Day Landings, the cracking of the Enigma code and the consumption of Spam.
According to former Soviet Union Prime Minister, Nikita Khrushchev, who claimed the protein-packed rations kept the Red Army going.
The US Company Hormel had shipped £100m of the stuff overseasby the end of the war!
Dubbed 'Miracle Meat' by the forces, one GI reportedly saved his own life by throwing SPAM at a Japanese soldier rushing at him with a grenade - it startled the enemy so much, the grenade went off in his hand before he could throw it.
Invented in 1937 by Hormel Foods, it was originally called SpicedHam, until American Ken Daigneau won a $100 competition to find a new name and SPAM was born.
SPAM was put at the top of school menus in the 1960's, immortalised by Monty Python in the 1970's, and soldits six billionth can in 2002.

The Soldier

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of Englands, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.
